Schönanger Alm
This circular hike begins at Schönanger Alm in Wildschönau. Parking is free, so drop your car off at the alm and follow the road uphill. The first sight you’ll come across is one of the many small chapels you’ll find across Austria; feel free to peak your head inside.
As you continue along the path and make your way further into the valley, prepare for beautiful views of the mountains that surround you.
Eventually, you’ll reach a bridge that crosses over a stream. I turned left after crossing it, which led to a path through the forest. This is the only real uphill section of the hike (about 200m elevation gain), after which the path leads you back down to where you started. Alternatively, you can also turn right which would take you back to the alm on an easier path with little to no gradient.
Naturally, no Austrian hike is complete without a visit to the alm. Traditional Austrian/Tyrolean fare is served here, and there’s plenty of outdoor seating if the weather is good or you have dogs in tow. I would recommend the Kaspressknödelsuppe if you’re visiting during winter; the portion size is excellent and the dish itself is warming!
Notes
Large portions of this route are popular with cross-country skiers during the winter months, and cows tend to roam free during the summer. As a result, keep an eye out for your pups and have a lead handy!
During the winter, this walk is almost completely in the shade until midday. If you want an early start, make sure to dress warmly.
